***** DIDSBURY HORSE SHOW *****

Presented By:

Didsbury Agricultural Society

Horse Show Committee

“The Didsbury Horse Show competition is a sanctioned as a Bronze competition member of Equine Canada, 2685 Queensview Drive, Suite 100 , Ottawa , Ontario , K2B 8K2 and is governed by the rules of EC.”

Statement of Principle: Equine Canada (EC), the National Equestrian Federation of Canada, supports adherence to human treatment of horses in all competitions under its jurisdiction.

The Equine Canada is committed to:

  • Upholding the welfare of horses, regardless of value, as a primary consideration in all activities;
  • Requiring that horses be treated with kindness, respect and the compassion that they deserve, and that they never be subjected to mistreatment;
  • Ensuring those owners, trainers, exhibitors or their agents use responsible care in the handling, treatment and transportation of their horses as well as horses placed in their care for any purpose;
  • Providing for the continuous well-being of horses by encouraging routine inspection and consultation with health care professionals and competition officials to achieve the highest possible standards of nutrition, health, comfort, sanitation and safety as a matter of standard operating procedure;
  • Continuing to support scientific studies on equine health and welfare;
  • Increasing education in training and horsemanship practices;
  • Requiring owners, trainers and exhibitors to know and follow their sanctioning organizations’ rules, and to work within industry regulations in all equestrian competition;
  • Reviewing, revising and developing competition rules an regulations that protect the welfare of horses;
  • The standard by which conduct or treatment will be measured is that which a person, informed and experienced in generally accepted equine training and exhibition procedures, would determine to be neither cruel, abusive nor inhumane.

DIDSBURY HORSE SHOW RULES AND REGULATIONS

“Every class offered herein is covered by the rules and specifications of the current rules of EC and will be held and judged in accordance with the EC Rule Book.”

  • The Executive Committee reserves the right to decide a point not covered by the rules, and to correct any error or make any necessary alterations in the rules, prize lists or program.
  • Exhibitors are responsible for knowing when their stock will be judged. Animals must be in the show ring promptly after being called. The calling of classes is a courtesy only. A three- (3) minute gate hold for tack changes will be strictly adhered to. The hitching ring attendants must be notified in advance if a gate hold is required. Tack changes are to be done in the Hitching Ring area.
  • A class that has three (3) or less entries may be cancelled, or combined at the discretion of the Executive Committee. This rule will be strictly adhered to, and entrants will be notified as soon as possible.
  • Horses are classified as over 14.2 hands; ponies as 14.2 hands and under. The exception is a purebred horse that is 14.2 hands or under. It will be classified as a horse, unless it is of a definite pony breed.
  • A horse or pony shall be considered as one year old on the first day of January following the date of foaling.
  • Dogs on the grounds must be on a leash at all times. Absolutely no dogs will be permitted in barns, hitching ring or arena area.
  • Attire for line classes only may include blue jeans, if clean and neat, and with a long sleeved shirt (Local ruling).
  • SAFETY REGULATION: *Junior competitors must wear proper fitting, approved protective headgear, with the safety harness correctly secured, at all times while mounted on competition or events grounds. Approved headgear meets the ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials) standards and displays the SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) seal. The British standard, BSI , is also acceptable. At the present, if the junior is competing in a discipline or breed whose rules specify other headgear (eg. Western hats, Derbies), those rules supersede the new rule. However, all breeds and disciplines do allow protective headgear with no penalty, and we urge their members to put safety ahead of tradition and adopt the new rule. Therefore, no helmets are mandatory as yet in Saddle Seat or Western classes but they are recommended. Hunt seat on the flat must wear approved helmets complete with harness. Also mandatory for over fences classes.
  • Classes will be shown as scheduled.

Didsbury Horse Show’s
Obstacle Challenge

$200.00 PRIZE MONEY
Saturday July 11, 2009

For this competition up to 12 obstacles will be set up in the course. Each obstacle carries a value from 10 to 50 points according to difficulty. Some obstacles may be built so that they can be passed through/over from both directions. The competitor is credited with the number of points carried by each obstacle that has been successfully completed. No points are awarded if any part of the obstacle is altered or not completed. (No partial points/Judges ruling is final). Each obstacle may be negotiated only once; however it is not necessary to negotiate all obstacles. Horses may be ridden Western or English. (Two hands permitted)

Each competitor has 150 seconds to go through all of the obstacles they wish in any order . The start line must be crossed in any direction. Ringing of the bell at 150 seconds signals the end of the round and the competitor must then cross the finish line in any direction as quickly as possible to allow their time to be recorded. If they do not cross the finish line, they are placed in last place with the competitors that have the same number of points. When the fixed time of 150 seconds is reached, the competitor may complete an obstacle they have begun and then cross the finish line. This obstacle will count if it is completed correctly.

An obstacle will be provided marked as the “Jeopardy Challenge” and is worth 100 points. After the competitor has crossed the finish line, the judge will give the signal at which point the competitor has the option to complete the “Jeopardy Challenge.” If the obstacle is completed successfully within 40 seconds, 100 points will be added to the total score, but if the obstacle is not completed successfully within the time, 100 points will be deducted from the total score. The competitor may choose not to try this obstacle without penalty.

The competitor who has obtained the greatest number of points will be declared the winner. In the event of equality of points, the competitor with the fastest time between the start line and the finish line will be the winner. In the event that points and time for first place are equal, there will be a ride-off according to the same formula with a fixed time of 60 seconds.
